With a family of 10 people we go through a lot of personal care items.  Things like toothpaste, shampoo, hair stylers, and deodorant go really fast!  For a smaller family, I really recommend having a stock of the things you use all the time in order to have them when you need them and avoid paying too much.  For my big family I have to buy these things twice a month just to keep ahead of demand.

Rolling rewards

Luckily for me and my family I can get free personal care items almost every week at the drug stores by using their reward programs.  CVS, Rite Aid, and Walgreens regularly offer items like toothpaste free after store rewards. You pay for the item but then you get the price of the item back in store rewards.  This is a great deal and I love to find them!  Often you can use a coupon to even get more back in rewards then you pay!  I also regularly find items like shampoo, deodorant, hair stylers, and body wash on sale with a reward and I find a coupon to use so that the amount you pay after using the coupon is the same or less than the reward you get back. Score!

For Example:

walgreens free with reward

Buy 1 Colgate Toothpaste, Mouthwash, and Toothbrushes– $3.00
Buy 1, Receive $2.50 Register Reward
Use $0.50 off Colgate Toothpaste
Pay $3.50
Receive $3.50 Register Reward
Final Price: FREE

These sales are my very favorite kind because you can get the items we all use every day for free after rewards often even without using coupons!  If you want to make this even more amazing, you can get these without spending anything out of your pocket or very little by Rolling Rewards.  When you roll rewards, you use the rewards you have already earned to buy items that offer rewards.  I give examples of how I am rolling my rewards at Walgreens every week.  This week (11/8/15) is a very good example.  There is potential to do this:

Transaction #1

Buy 1 Colgate Toothpaste– $3.49
Buy 1, Receive $2.50 Register Reward
Use $2/1 Colgate Toothpaste, exp. 11/21/15 (SS 11/08/15)
Pay $1.49
Receive $2.50 Register Reward
Final Price: $1.01 Moneymaker

Transaction #2

Buy 3 Hallmark Card -$0.99
Buy 3, Receive $3.00 Register Reward through 11/14
Cost $2.97 for 3
Use $2.50 Register Reward from Transaction #1
Pay $0.47
Receive $3.00 Register Reward to use next time

Some things to remember when you are Rolling Rewards

  • Each store has rules and it takes planning and practice.  I list the rules for each store I post at the bottom of all of my Coupon Match-Ups.
  • Pay attention to expiration dates.  It is just so frustrating to buy a product because of the reward and then let it expire.
  • While you get the hang of it, let me do the work for you.
